Things I've been working on...(January - March, 2022)

Here are a few things I've been creating, playing with and working on over the past few months...

Nothing says Spring like pastels. And while I personally don't love the pastel color scheme, I think that when it is done right, it can be very soft, soothing, and even sophisticated. They often symbolize rebirth, renewal and rejuvenation, which is why we are often drawn to them in the Spring and for nurseries. For this space, I love how the velvet texture of the seating really continues the consistency of the soft, inviting feeling that the colors bring in. The peach, pink and blue hues feel calming and inviting, while the greenery plays to the earthiness of the colors. As if it weren't already beckoning you to come, take a load off and relax awhile, the blankets, books, candles and bar really add the elements that encourage getting cozy and taking a much needed rest that is necessary for renewal and rejuvenation.

Speaking of "Rebirth"...I had a lot of fun creating these adorable nurseries. I mean just look at those sweet animals, comfy chairs and calming colors. The pink one originally began as a challenge that I was doing for Spoak, in which we were prompted to use the mauve color you see on the accent wall. The moment I laid eyes on the color, I just KNEW I wanted to make it into a nursery. From there I decided I would use a pink, grey, white and gold palette to create a sweet, calming and nurturing environment that felt cozy for the adults and fun for the baby. After completing this decidedly soft, "feminine" and pastel environment, I decided I wanted to do something similar while also completely different. And so the second nursery was created.

For this one, I thought of my nephew and wanted to channel his wild, natural and busy energy. Knowing I wanted elements of nature and wild playfulness, I decided on a jungle theme. From there I began collecting greens and browns with hints of gold and orange. Not wanting it to be too dark and heavy, I balanced this with creams and whites to keep things on the lighter side. I love how the gold and white make it feel classy and sophisticated while the greens and browns give it that natural, earthy and wild energy that makes me just want to run through the jungle with the lions.

Much like the pastel nursery, the cabin in the top picture (with the sage green wall) was born from a challenge in which we were prompted to create our ideal cabin space. I was stoked about this prompt as I have been DYING to style a cabin retreat. Given that the encouragement came to create "my" ideal cabin space, I, of course, included lots of elements that reflected nature (plants, grasses, wood, animals, etc.) and glamour (gold, crystal, etc.) while promoting a sense of cozy sophistication (fluffy blankets, fur pillows, candles, tufted leather couches, soft poufs, Sherpa-upholstered chairs, etc.) to create a space that was warm, inviting. Overall I love the relaxed, cozy luxury of this space.

When I showed it to my husband, however, he suggested that while he liked it, it wasn't necessarily the interior he thought of when he imagined "his" ideal cabin. This inspired me to create something more to his tastes. So, I started by darkening the accent wall (to create a feeling of intimacy and rustic masculinity). As he isn't one for unnecessary clutter, I also reduced the decor elements to just a few necessary items (a bar for making "manly" drinks like whiskey's neat, a few dark books for reading by the fire, a record player and a few records, some greenery to bring the feeling of the outdoors inside, etc.) I also added elements like dark leather couches, a dark bearskin rug, no frills lamps, a concrete side table, an antler chandelier, artwork of large and powerful animals and a stone fireplace to increase the rustic and "manly" nature of the space. Turns out, I actually like this space even better than the one I originally created for myself!

This space was also created from a challenge. The challenge was to showcase lighting options from Mitzi. One of the things I love about these challenges is that it requires me to explore new brands and new products. Given the luxurious look of Mitzi's lighting options, I decided to go all "high society" with a penthouse, marble tile, velvet couches and gold touches. Love that this space makes me want to curl up with a good book, some candlelight and fancy champagne.

Definitely one of my favorite space I've ever designed. This was born from a dream of creating a eco-luxury resort that specializes in holistic wellness. With it's clean lines, luxury touches and simplicity, it makes me want to come curl up after a nice, long massage and facial session. I love how the white makes it feel clean, unencumbered, fresh and rejuvenated while the black elements ground it a little. The gold and wood touches warm it up and give it that feeling of upscale luxury, while the greenery brings nature to the scene and gives you that calm, natural and peaceful feeling. This is definitely a space I would head to for some rest, relaxation and rejuvenation.

I'm loving all the fun and creativity this first quarter of 2022 has brought about. I can't wait to see what the next quarter has in store!

Always,

Melissa
