WM Designs, like so many small businesses, was born out of necessity. Given our global resource crisis, design "needed" to be more ethical. My friends and family also "needed" support in creating environments they loved. But most of all, I "needed" a creative and fun way to contribute to society.
All of my career so far had been focused on work that is about using my "head." It is intellectual work and while I really do crave intellectual challenges, I wasn't happy. I was depleted. Although I was contributing to making the world "work" better, I wasn't contributing to the beauty of the world, as my soul was demanding of me.
During a particularly low point in the summer of 2021, I had decided to do a little staycation and see if I couldn't reignite my zeal for the business I had been running and the work I was doing. As God/Goddess/The Universe/Source Power so often does, it had other plans. Instead of rebuilding the flame for my current work, the stay at the SCP Redmond Hotel, ignited a flame and passion for sustainable/ethical design. Surrounded by natural/local materials and eco-friendly design everywhere I looked, brought me a sense of peace, excitement and calm that made me realize that I would love to use design and style to bring those same feelings to others all over the world in a way that makes the world a better place at the same time.
Pinterest had always been a hobby of mine. Creating boards that were visual representations of my ideal life, soothed me, inspired me and brought me a lot of joy. Walking into a room and immediately assessing its potential or admiring it's style always elevated my mood and brought a rush of energy into my body. It wasn't until a few months ago that I didn't realize this didn't happen for everyone.
I had always assumed that most people had Pinterest pages that they worked on in their spare time. Or that they also got butterflies when walking into a beautiful room and when thinking about how that room could be even more beautiful. However, during a party one evening, I overheard a few of my friends talking about how they hadn't decorated their new places because they felt so overwhelmed. For them, the desire to have a nice space was there, but the joy of making it that way was overshadowed by the overwhelm of not knowing how to start or what to do.
The moment I made the decision to start WM Designs, my heart, body, mind and soul felt aligned. This company is an expression of my values, of my passions and of that which brings me joy. But it was ultimately born to bring joy, contentedness, energy, inspiration, calm, peace and beauty to this world in a way that heals this world instead of harms it.
